A little like Cragganmore 12yo, one was never enough and I could sip a glass all night long too. On my journey of whisky discovery, Jura Superstition was one of the early supermarket bargain bottles I bought that I found simply un-put-down-able.
A whisky that splits opinions almost as much as Jura distillery itself. What I say:įor me the classic Jura expression: Superstition.
Superstition is aged in a selection of the finest ex-Bourbon casks to bring out spicy notes and subtle smokiness. The warmth of the tongue releases spice, honey, pine and peat. Light phenolic aromas with subtle nuances of honey and spice result in a sweet yet smoky delight. Colourĭeep mahogany with glistening golden highlights. When you raise a glass of this whisky, you’re raising a glass to the ancient ways of our island. As a nod to them, and to our island home, still dotted with ancient stones and markings, we called this expression Superstition. Islanders were a superstitious lot in the past.
Category: Island single malt scotch whisky. ( Leave a comment ) Jura Superstition (40%, OB, 2016). Priceģ5-40 euros: a fair price for a bottle of peaty whiskey that does not disappoint. What it lacks in charisma is well compensated by pleasantness and balance.įor those who love not too peaty spirits or those who want to try a peaty but not too aggressive whiskey for the first time, this is the bottle to taste. Overall it is a well-designed whiskey, very set and stylized, but nothing to complain about. Flavors of licorice, honey and candied citrus in the finish. The structure is sound, firm, well underlined by a rocky sapidity. There is salt, iodine, and a light campfire at the back of the nose. The mouth is warm and round, very smooth despite the tips of pepper and alcohol that sting the palate. What Does Superstition Isle of Jura 12 taste like? As close as it is, do not think this peat is minimally comparable to that of Islay’s cousins. Long finish with aromatic herbs, sea and beeswax. The variety is discreet, it moves with cleanliness without ever overdoing it and although the spices are massive, it lets out herbaceous suggestions, which embellish the aromatic picture. The aromas are a graceful symphony of honey, toffee, cedar, acacia, ripe fruit, custard, endless dried fruit, flowers, light traces of peat, all framed by strong iodized echoes due to the influence of the sea. The color is amber with such golden reflections. It is a blend of two whiskeys aged 13 and 21, not exactly a youngster! The bouquet After a double distillation, the whiskey rests in barrels used to refine the bourbon. How Is Superstition Isle of Jura 12 produced?ĭiscontinuous distillation in copper alembic from malted and lightly smoked barley with peat. It has a little bit of everything in the correct dose.
On the whole, it is a pleasant distillate, easy to drink, with an elegant profile, but a little static and not very characterized. It’s a stylized whiskey marked by the wood, where the spices define the aromatic volume. With entry-level whisky, we do not want to diminish this distillate, but there is no doubt that it is only the first step in the hall of this fantastic distillery. We could call it the entry-level product for all lovers who want to approach the world of peaty whiskeys without taking a punch in the face from the peat of Ardbeg and Lagavulin drams.
